December 22, 2009 - Diversity Kiwanis Club Regular Meeting
Original Pancake House, Sioux Falls

President Lisa Carlson called the meeting to order on Tuesday December 22 at the Original Pancake House at 41st and Kiwanis.

Members and guests attending:  Carla Cooey, Lisa Carlson, Kimberly Stockinger, Mike Tolzin, Tracy Vik, Katie Studer, Vanessa Lopez, Wanda Promes, Bill Zortman, Kris Isakson, Marlys Fisher and guest Linda Nielsen

Tracy Vik updated everyone on the success of Project Warmup.  1175 blankets have been completed to date with another 13 promised, bringing the total to 1188 completed blankets!!!  The event was a complete success.  We will most likely need a larger venue next year due to accomodate all of the volunteers!!!  Our guest, Linda Nielsen, saw the advertisement for Project Warmup in the paper and showed up for the event not knowing anyone else there.  We were fortunate enough to have her join our DKC table tying blankets and were pleased that she decided to visit one of our regular meetings.  Everyone gave a round of applause to Tracy Vik for her tireless efforts in making Project Warmup such a success.

Mike Tolzin updated everyone on the Superbowl Squares fundraising project we have coming up in January.  We will have 100 squares on our giant grid that we will be selling for $10 per square.  We will pay out 50% of the $1000 money raised to the four winners (one each quarter) and the remaining $500 in proceeds will be used to pay shipping costs for the shoe drive for Guatemala we do in February.  The Vik family has agreed to design the Google Docs document so that we can input the squares we sell immediately online.  We'll need everyone's assistance in getting these squares sold so that we can raise enough money to ship the shoes.   The Superbowl is February 7.

Carla Cooey updated everyone on our upcoming shoe drive for Guatemala.  We will run the shoe drive the month of February.  Carla suggested that we concentrate on utilizing churches and day cares for our dropoff locations for the shoes rather than the Lewis Drug stores as we have done in the past.  We do not have a lot of advertising opportunities for the shoe drive, and by utilizing churches and day cares we can have them do the advertising for us.  We can put up flyers in the day cares and perhaps the day cares would be willing to pass out flyers to their families.  The churches could put an announcement in the church bulletin.  Vanessa Lopez indicated that there are a lot of people originating from Guatemala that belong to her church and she is willing to speak with many of them to get them involved.  There are also many Guatemalan businesses in town that may be willing to contribute to the cost of shipping the shoes.  Carla will work on getting the flyers made.  DKC members will be asked to contact any day cares and churches that they may have contact with to see if they would be willing to participate.  We will need to get collection boxes to all of these locations and regularly empty the boxes.  We will have $500 from the Superbowl fundraiser and $175 from our Cornhole Capers fundraiser to ship the shoes, but we will still be over $600 short of funding the shoe shipment so we will all need to think of fundraising ideas/opportunities.

Lisa Carlson and Carla Cooey inducted Vaness Lopez as the newest member of the Diversity Kiwanis Club.  We are excited to have Vanessa join our club and look forward to her participation in our upcoming projects.
